Westminster TranServ, the Balfour Beatty and Mouchel Group joint venture which provides services to Westminster City Council, has boosted its ‘green fleet’ with a Smith Newton 7.5t truck with a tipper body.
The tipper truck will be deployed in central London and will be used for general highway maintenance duties.
The truck is powered by four sodium nickel chloride 278v batteries and a 120kw induction motor. It is charged on board or via a domestic mains.
“Balfour Beatty is committed to minimising our impact on the environment. With its complete lack of carbon emissions, this new vehicle is set to do just that. We look forward to using the Smith Newton in Westminster. It could well be a vehicle of choice on future contracts.
”Gary Merrills, Transport & Plant Manager at Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Services
The Smith Newton 7.5t tipper truck has a top speed of 50mph and travels up to 100 miles on a single charge. The truck's body is built from an ultra-light, totally recyclable material, and it comes with power-assisted steering, front and rear suspension, and a hydraulic brake system.
